SOHO GLASSWORKS, BIRMINGHAM

The original glasshouse cone was uncovered. It was 20m in diameter with two gaps in its northern side, presumably leading to ancillary buildings. The cone had been constructed over an east/west-aligned brick-vaulted tunnel, which probably served the duel role of providing access for fuel from the nearby canal, and as a flue for the central glass furnace. Solidified glass was found adhering to a number of bricks.

Detailed analysis of the excavated structures and glassmaking waste is currently ongoing and a full report will be published in due course.
