Assessing
Aggregates - Page 2 of 3THE IMPORTANCE OF BEING ARCHAEOLOGISTSContinued...Most recently, an assessment of this type has been undertaken in the County of Worcestershire. Cotswold Archaeology (CA) was asked to contribute to an archaeological resource assessment of the aggregates deposits for that County, to see what potentially lay beneath the soil and would therefore be most prone to destruction. This allowed CA to renew its working partnership with Worcestershire County Council Historic Environment and Archaeology Service, with previous collaborations including the excavations at Newport Street, Worcester. The overall project has been funded by English Heritage through the Aggregates Levy Sustainability Fund, in conjunction with other assessments in the adjacent counties of Gloucestershire and Warwickshire. Our work will contribute to an overall concept of updating, improving and enhancing a number of aspects in the way the potential archaeological remains within aggregate deposits are understood, investigated and the information disseminated. Firstly, there is the contribution to the overview of the project with the production of a written assessment report, broken down by archaeological periods. CA has contributed sections to this report, including the Middle Bronze Age to Iron Age, Late Iron Age and Roman and post-medieval. These outline what is already known from the County. It will be placed online so as to be accessible to all who might need it, including; local government staff, the minerals industry as a whole and the public. This text will also contribute to reassessing the requirements of future extraction sites with existing permissions as well as implementing conditions for any future applications and predicting what potential material may lie within future quarry sites. © Cotswold Archaeological Trust Limited.
